Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What does 'night-time shutoff' or 'light sensor' mean?

Most cuckoo clocks (either mechanical or battery powered) come with 'night-time shutoff' in either a manual or 'light sensor' variety. This just means that both varieties enable you to control when the clock makes sounds.

Mechanical cuckoo clocks have a manual 'night-time shutoff' which are usually a lever with 2 positions - sound on or sound off.

Battery powered cuckoo clocks usually come with an automatic 'night-time shutoff' otherwise known as a light sensor which detects light levels and disables sound when the lights are off or it is very dark. While some include volume levels as well as sound on/off positions, some models also include an option to stop the sound between the hours of 9:00pm and 8:00am.

This beautiful battery-powered carved cuckoo clock is crafted by the 'Engstler' cuckoo clock company who is a renowned Black Forest cuckoo clockmaker in the Baden-Württemberg region of Germany.

Design

Made from wood sourced locally from the Black Forest in Germany and carved by hand by a master carver, this traditional carved cuckoo clock is perfect for adding some rustic charm to any living room, hallway or study, and would look at home in any room or space with natural wood features or spaces with a rustic or 'down-to-earth' decor. This cherished cuckoo clock would also make for a unique and unforgettable gift for yourself or a loved one. Its hourly cuckoo chime is a friendly reminder of the beauty in the natural world; of clear sparkling brooks; of pine-covered mountains.

This clock features:

  • Battery-powered (which typically last for one year before needing a change).
  • A moving cuckoo bird which moves out from behind its door and chimes with a 'cuckoo' sound on the hour, with the number of calls matching the hour. Each cuckoo chime is followed by a soft echo as if to mimic the sound coming from a deep forest valley.
  • The soft and natural sound of a softly flowing river during the cuckoo call.
  • A moving pendulum that sways side-to-side with the seconds.
  • An automatic night-time shut off with a built-in light sensor which automatically switches off the sound when the lights go out. The sound can also be switched off manually with a switch.

Battery-powered

This cuckoo clock does not need to be manually wound because it is battery powered. Upon each hour the little cuckoo bird peeps out from its door and sings in the hour with a 'cuckoo' call corresponding with the time. This cuckoo clock also features an automatic night-time shut-off which works via a light sensor and shuts the sound off when the room is dark.

Materials

This clock is constructed with a wooden dial, wooden hands, wooden pendulum, though the cuckoo bird, with its moving parts, is made of plastic. The clock's weights are made of molded plastic that is painted to look like cast iron. The dimensions listed below refer only to the clock without pendulum and weights however, as its weights are purely decorative, they do not add much extra height.

Worried about your order arriving on time? Nine out of ten of our orders arrive within the estimated delivery time or even earlier. However sometimes there can be factors (such as availability and delivery location) that can affect the delivery time and lengthen it by a few days or even a week or two for some more complex models.
